China Unveils Bird-Like Surveillance Drone That Flaps Its Wings

China has introduced a new biomimetic surveillance drone that mimics the appearance and movement of a real bird, flapping its wings while in flight. Showcased during the anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), this ornithopter is designed to conduct stealth reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering missions without being detected. Resembling a Eurasian sparrow, the drone is engineered to blend seamlessly into its surroundings.

These types of ornithopter drones are known for their advanced sensors and are well-suited for short-range reconnaissance missions. Some reports suggest that they could be equipped with micro warheads for precision strikes against enemy targets. However, due to their limited flight range and endurance, they are primarily used for low-altitude and short-duration surveillance operations.

During the PLA Naval Commandos’ demonstration, the Chinese spy drone was deployed from underwater and then took flight, flapping its wings like a real bird before soaring through the air for several minutes. Another video showcased a larger biomimetic drone, approximately the size of a raven or hawk, being operated by a soldier. These designs present a significant advantage in military applications, as they have a much lower risk of detection compared to conventional surveillance systems.

The emergence of these biomimetic drones has also attracted international attention. The Kyiv Post listed them among “technologies that are difficult to identify as threats in warfare.” However, China’s interest in biomimetic military technology is not new.

In 2021, China unveiled “robo-fish” underwater spy drones, as reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP). As China continues to develop stealthy and hard-to-detect unmanned systems, the role of biomimetic surveillance technology in modern warfare is becoming increasingly significant.
